Hof der dingen - Boots for farm work - Lies Sampers

Laarzen met modder van Lies Sampers

“Agriculture is the greatest profession there is. But it’s so much more than farming– you need to be passionate about what you do. And more importantly, you need to get your message across to the public. Your passion needs to be contagious.”

Meet Lies Sampers from Vlamertinge, who was named Flanders’ Most Inspiring Female Farmer in 2022—and for good reason.

Part-time nurse, full-time mom, full-time farmer, and active member of several agricultural organisations and the school’s parent committee…, Lies could also be called a professional juggler. Does being a hardworking jack-of-all-trades run in the family?

“Well, I can hardly say no, honestly,” she laughs. Juggling all these roles and responsibilities isn’t exactly easy, and Lies doesn’t pretend otherwise. She's very candid about the struggles she’s facing - something she wishes more farmers felt comfortable doing.

“West Flemish people are known for being hardworking,” she says, “but they’re not the biggest talkers. Many bottle things up. It's hard for them to open up about their struggles or worries. Did you know that West Flanders has the highest suidcide rate in Belgium, especially in the agricultural sector?” Lies is determined to help break that cycle—by showing that strength also lies in vulnerability.

For her, these boots respresent her persistant spirit. “I can’t run in these boots”, she smiles, “but I sure can get a lot done in them”.
