Hof der dingen - Mustard jar from Wostyn

Whether you dollop it on your sandwich or whisk it into mayonnaise, mustard is the flavour that wakes up your taste buds. Mustard may seem like a simple condiment… unless you make it in Torhout.
Ivo-Jacob Wostyn began crafting mustard here in 1869. The business has been handed down through the generations, and today Piet Wostyn proudly represents the fifth generation of passionate mustard makers.
Around 1900, Belgium counted 163 registered mustard makers. Today, only eight remain – and just one of them is in West Flanders.
Traditionally, mustard was stored in stone jars like the one you’re looking at right now. This one – donated by Piet Wostyn himself- is made of clay and finished with a salt glaze and dates back to the early 1930s. A stone jar is the ideal packaging for mustard, protecting it from light and heat. Jars came in various sizes, ranging from 100 g to 5 kg.
From Torhout to your table — savour it with a cheese platter in our café, or grab a jar from our shop and bring a piece of West Flemish tradition back home.
