Hof der dingen - Ruler atelier Verilin
When decorating the Provincial Palace — a setting straight out of a Harry Potter scene, with its soaring arches and sense of magic — curator Wim Opbrouck insisted on celebrating local craftsmanship and entrepreneurship.
The result: ten giant linen banners, crafted by Atelier Verilin from Heule and artistically decorated by Opbrouck himself. He worked the old-fashioned way, with a one-metre wooden ruler in hand — his reference point for gauging proportions- as he painted the designs directly onto the fabric.
Accompanied by a soundscape that will now ring out every hour much like a Belfry, the banners add extra flair to the building’s grand historic setting. They’re also a nod to the flax industry, which has been intertwined with the south of our province for as long as anyone can remember, and an ode to creative ateliers like Verilin that remain among the world’s best.
