Hof der dingen - The mixtape of DJ Flip Ryelandt

Het sulferdozeke van Flip Kowlier of de cassette van Will Tura

DJ Flip is one of the key figures in the early Flemish hip-hop scene. He was the resident hip-hop DJ at Ancienne Belgique (AB) in Brussels and collaborated with household names such as Flip Kowlier. He tragically lost his life at the young age of 2025 in 2003 when he was struck by a car while cycling near the Bruges train station. To this day, a graffiti mural can be found in the nearby bike tunnel commemorating his legacy.

His childhood friend Pierre Muylle donated Flip’s mixtape to us and shared his story.

“In the ’90s, hip-hop became more popular and mainstream. Worldwide, artists were breaking through – including in Bruges. After the pioneering days of Rhyme Cut Core, DJ Flip began making waves in the local hip-hop scene.”, explains Muylle.

Mixtapes on cassette were the easiest way to share your music back then, and Flip made the best ones – they flew off the shelves both in Bruges and Gent. His unique talent and natural style didn’t go unnoticed, and he quickly garnered international attention – he even won a DJ competition held by UK label Ninja Tune.

He became a regular guest on Studio Brussel (STUBRU) and was a resident DJ at AB, serving as an opening act for his musical heroes. He really helped to put Kaapstad – now Entrepot – on the map with his performances at the Stubnitz (party boat).

When we heard that he was involved in a fatal car accident, our world came crashing down. He was so young, full of life and unlimited potential – who knows what he might have achieved? We can only imagine – a fact that remains an open wound.

“He left us empty-handed and utterly defeated. But I’ve always kept this mixed-tape with me as a reminder of the young man that touched so many souls.”, says Pierre.
